Dr. Kelly Culwell serves as Head of Research and Development, Women’s Health. Kelly is an obstetrician/gynecologist with over 20 years specializing in women’s health and contraceptive research. Prior to joining Sebela, Kelly served as Senior Vice President & Chief Medical Officer at Afaxys. In this position, she led the company’s drug research and development programs, medical affairs, and pharmacovigilence. Prior to Afaxys, Kelly was the Chief Medical Officer at Evofem Biosciences where she led the regulatory and clinical development teams to advance Evofem’s lead contraceptive product candidate from clinical stage development through FDA approval and launch while simultaneously designing and implementing clinical trials for additional indications, including the prevention of sexually transmitted infections.
In addition, Kelly has held various global leadership roles, including serving as a Medical Officer for the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland and a Senior Advisor at International Planned Parenthood Federation in London, UK.
Kelly holds a BS degree in Biological Sciences from California Lutheran University, Master of Public Health from Northwestern University and Doctor of Medicine from University of California at Davis. She completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology internship and residency at University of California, San Diego and a Fellowship in Family Planning and Contraceptive Research at Northwestern University.
